Scotch Derrick Crane Arrives at Mona Engineering

In August 2021 Mona Lifting were awarded the contract to dismantle and restore the final remaining Scotch Derrick Crane from the historic Hull shipyards.

The first stage of the process was to carefully dismantle the crane on-site, and transport the sections back to our facility. This work was completed in December 2021.

With the crane now safely at Mona Lifting the actual restoration process can begin. The restoration will be comprehensive, but sympathetic in order to maintain the historic authenticity of the crane. All steelwork that can be repaired will have the existing coatings removed, and will then be blast cleaned and visually inspected prior to any necessary repair. Some parts of the crane that are beyond repair will be fabricated by Mona, and we are currently working on the CAD drawings to recreate the cabin in the original look and style.

Crucial to the overall restoration is carefully colour matching the final finish to the original livery, and we are pleased to be supported by International Paints for this task to select a suitable coating system for the crane.

Close client contact is vital for work on such a unique and historic piece of industrial hardware, and we are pleased to have welcomed representatives of the Hull Maritime project to our facility on 9th February to view the work to date.

The Hull Maritime project, funded by Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, encompasses the redevelopment of five historic sites in Hull city centre: the transformation of the Grade II* Hull Maritime Museum and the Dock Office Chambers, the creation of a new visitor attraction at the North End Shipyard and the restoration two historic vessels, the Arctic Corsair and Spurn Lightship.
