Work Starts to Dismantle Hull's Last Remaining Scotch Derrick Crane

In August 2021 Mona Lifting were awarded the contract to dismantle and restore the final remaining Scotch Derrick Crane from the historic Hull shipyards. Work on the project is now underway.

After preparatory works onsite, the crane will be carefully dismantled into sections, lifted by mobile crane onto trucks and transported to Mona’s works for a sympathetic repair and restoration process. Corrosion will be treated by careful blast cleaning, and the restoration will use traditional riveting and joining techniques to maintain the original look and historic integrity of the crane. Finally, all metal items will be re-coated in two-pack epoxy paints in colours carefully matched to the original livery.

Once complete the crane will return to a new location within the North End Shipyard, which will also become the new home for the Arctic Corsair; a 1960s built deep-sea trawler that was converted to a museum ship in 1999. A new visitor centre will complete the rejuvenation of this part of the riverside, and together provide a new visitor attraction for the city.

Councillor Daren Hale, Portfolio Holder for Economic Investment, Regeneration and Planning, Land and Property, said: “It’s great to see work start on the city’s last remaining Scotch Derrick crane. This stiff legged crane has been rescued, by restoring and rebuilding this piece of equipment it will give it a new lease of life so visitors can appreciate its history, significance and story.”

Gethin Jones of Mona Lifting said: “We are very proud and honoured to have been selected to carry out this interesting and technically demanding work.”

The work to repair the crane is expected to take six months to complete.

The Hull Maritime project, funded by Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, encompasses the redevelopment of five historic sites in Hull city centre: the transformation of the Grade II* Hull Maritime Museum and the Dock Office Chambers, the creation of a new visitor attraction at the North End Shipyard and the restoration two historic vessels, the Arctic Corsair and Spurn Lightship.
