In August 2021 Mona Lifting were awarded the contract to dismantle and restore the final remaining Scotch Derrick Crane from the historic Hull shipyards.
The crane arrived safely at our facility back in December 2021 after a carefully planned process to dismantle and transport the sections. Since then we have been busy on the restoration, at all stages working closely with the other stakeholders in the Hull Maritime project.
Work on heritage items is always a painstaking process – as such an important piece of Hull’s maritime heritage it is vital that the restoration is true to the original design and finish of the crane, including use of special rivet head bolts to maintain the historic appearance.
The individual sections of the crane have now been through a process of blast cleaning, repair of corrosion and a finishing and painting procedure that will ensure the integrity of the paint through the challenges of transport and reassembly, and to ensure the crane can be enjoyed by visitors to Hull’s North End Shipyard and the Arctic Corsair for many years to come.
Watch a video of the work to date, from dismantling to painting:
The Hull Maritime project, funded by Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, encompasses the redevelopment of five historic sites in Hull city centre: the transformation of the Grade II* Hull Maritime Museum and the Dock Office Chambers, the creation of a new visitor attraction at the North End Shipyard and the restoration two historic vessels, the Arctic Corsair and Spurn Lightship.
Mona are proud to be working with the following organisations on the restoration of this historic crane.
