On the 13th July 2021 the bespoke 105 tonne lifting tool Mona designed and manufactured for CERN – the European Nuclear Research facility in Geneva – was used for the first time.
The ATLAS project is a research experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, designed to search for evidence of advanced theories of particle physics. The experiment is housed in a vast underground cavern, and the hardware required for the experiment, including the “New Small Wheel” detectors require careful lifting and handling for installation.
To facilitate this Mona designed and manufactured a bespoke lifting tool to lift, store and transport the New Small Wheel structure. We were delighted to hear from CERN that the first of the two wheels has been successfully lifted and lowered into the experimental cavern, marking another milepost in the project.
