Mona Lifting have been working for James Fisher Nuclear since April 2019, with planned installation of several plant items in 2022.
Winfrith was a nuclear power station utilising a Steam Generating Heavy Water Reactor (SGHWR). Closed in 1990, the Winfrith site is owned by the Nuclear Decommission Authority and the decommissioning programme is being managed by Magnox with a number of contactors involved in the works.
Identifying a requirement for specialist lifting equipment, James Fisher Nuclear approached Mona and subsequently awarded us the contract to design, manufacture and install a bespoke overhead travelling crane. The crane, and associated structures, will be used as part of the Core Segmentation Project which will see the dismantling, packing and exporting of the reactor core as part of the wider programme to decommission and restore the entire Winfrith site.
