Portmeirion Biomas Heating Project

Portmeirion Biomas Heating Project

27th June 2016

Portmeirion Ltd is installaing a megawatt Biomas District Heating Scheme to provide all
hot water and heating requirements at Portmeirion village.

The company has invested £ 1.5M to realise this project which is scheduled for
completion in early spring, 2016. An Energy Centre measuring 40m by 12m has
been constructed on site by Mona Lifting of Llangefni to house two 499kW Froling
Biomass Boilers, water tanks and space for of wood chip storage. Civil engineers
K.W.Jones from Penrhyndeudraeth excavated 2.5 kms of trenching to lay the necessary
pipework to connect the system to 27 properties inclduing Castell Deudraeth and the
Hotel Portmeirion. The pipework is made and supplied by Rehau who have production
facilities in Tanysgrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog employing 170 people. The overall biomas
installation work is contracted to ESP Energy, based in Shrewsbury, who are one of the
leading Renewable Energy Specialists in Wales the Midlands.

The wood used is taken from renewable sources, the forests that are managed in accordance
with green energy guidelines. A tree is planted for each tree felled. Emissions
from wood fuel contain virtually no sulphur dioxide and very low levels of nitrous oxides,
so won’t cause acid rain. Burning wood cleanly gives off very low amounts of smoke
particulates. We are pleased that Portmeirion village has managed to adopt a renewed
energy policy that will help lower the carbon footprint and provide Green Energy for
many years to come.
